I Don’t Know Lyrics

[Verse 1]
My friend lost a sister today
A week ago her father passed away
Now she's gotta help raise her sister's daughter
Be a mother and a father for her
If I lost my brother I don't think I could go on
If I lost my mother another

[Pre-Chorus]
I don't know
I don't know
I don't know
I don't know
If I could go on

I don't know
I don't know
I don't know
I don't know
If I could go on

[Chorus]
All I know is I could never go back
All I know is I could never go back
All I know is I could never go back
Go back
[Verse 2]
When Jim passed we walked the shore
After the service closed the church's door
Kimmy, William and me blew a kiss to the sea
For the memories turn the ashes to seed
Cuz God ain’t watching me

You know the truth never freed a thing
Just gotta be strong for the team

[Pre-Chorus]
I don't know
I don't know
I don't know
I don't know
If I could go on

I don't know
I don't know
I don't know
I don't know
If I could go on

[Chorus]
All I knew is I could never go back
All I knew is I could never go back
All I knew is I could never go back
Go back

Genius Annotation

I Don’t Know” starts from an event on a friend’s life, which makes Herring reflect about how the death of his loved ones would affect him, drawing from his own memories of an old deceased friend.

BBNG go for a subdued soulful sound, reminiscent of the 50’s, on Herring’s second vocal collaboration with the quintet. This was a final song from the IV sessions which unlike “Time Moves Slow” didn’t make make it to the 2016 album.

Proud to share this deeply meaningful and poetic piece from a beautiful honest soul. – Alexander Sowinski

On March 31, 2018 Sam Herring joined BBNG on stage, in their hometown of Toronto to perform with them their collaborations, closing with “I Don’t Know”:
