Following the ballad-like performance of “Divide” comes “Million Pieces.” The song is Bastille’s first foray into EDM on a major record. Describing the musical aspects of the song, Dan Smith told Billboard:

The riff at the beginning is a nod to some of the synth riffs from the ‘90s, and we wanted to do a Bastille song that had a drop which is something we haven’t really done before.

Lyrics from the song were originally heard in a much slower form in “The Descent” from the band’s previous release, Other People’s Heartache Pt. 4.

The song’s lyrics describe a continued struggle to not be distracted by the problems of the world and to simply enjoy a night out. In the same interview with Billboard, Dan described the song as being

about trying to come up at a party while someone has cornered you to talk about politics, and basically just saying, “OK cool, that stuff is important and it’s fine but please can we talk about it tomorrow, or not?”

This conflict, taking place at 2:39 AM, eventually leads to the spiral into anxiety in next track on the album, “Doom Days,” taking place just 28 minutes later.
