Laura Palmer Lyrics

[Intro]
Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh

[Verse 1]
Walking out into the dark, cutting out a different path
Lead by a beating heart
All the people of the town cast their eyes right to the ground
In matters of the heart

[Pre-Chorus]
The night was all you had
You ran into the night from all you had
Found yourself a path up on the ground
You ran into the night; you can't be found

[Chorus]
But this is your heart
Can you feel it? Can you feel it?
Pumps through your veins
Can you feel it? Can you feel it?

[Verse 2]
Summer evening, breezes blew, drawing voices deep from you
Lead by your beating heart
What a year and what a night, what terrifying final sights
Put out your beating heart
[Pre-Chorus]
The night was all you had
You ran into the night from all you had
Found yourself a path up on the ground
You ran into the night; you can't be found

[Chorus]
But, this is your heart
Can you feel it? Can you feel it?
Pumps through your veins
Can you feel it? Can you feel it?

[Bridge]
If you had your gun
Would you shoot it at the sky? Why?

To see where it would fall
Or will you come down at all?
If you had your gun
Would you shoot it at the sky? Why?
To see where your bullet would fall
Or will you come down at all?

[Chorus]
This is your heart
Can you feel it? Can you feel it?
Pumps through your veins
Can you feel it? Can you feel it?
This is your racing heart
Can you feel it? Can you feel it?
Pumps through your veins
Can you feel it? Can you feel it?

Genius Annotation

“Laura Palmer” is the fifth single released from Bastille’s 2013 album, Bad Blood. It also appears on the album as the eleventh track. The song’s title comes from the ABC television programme, Twin Peaks, which aired in 1990 and 1991. Twin Peaks revolved around the murder of Laura Palmer, a seventeen-year-old girl in the rural town of Twin Peaks, Washington. The song is driven throughout by a quick, constant bass drum hit, simulating the beat of the heart that is the subject of the chorus, which features soaring vocals from frontman Dan Smith, as well as Bastille’s signature synthesizer sound. The verse, intro, and outro feature a string orchestra.

What did Bastille say about "Laura Palmer"?
Genius Answer

Frontman Dan Smith told, in a NME Song Stories interview, that he was influenced by Twin Peaks and

wanted to kind of clunky nod towards David Lynch and Twin Peaks and the slight, weird, eerie atmosphere of it all. For me, on this track, I just wanted [the intro and outro] to feel sort of strange, and so I set the atmosphere. […] When we first recorded it, it was quite more electronic than it is now – it didn’t really sit comfortably with me.
