Those Nights Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I can feel your eyes in the back of my head
Burning, burning, burning
Floating through the room as the hairs on my arms are
Rising, rising, rising
I'm chemically drawn closer to you
Eyes wide, eyes wide open
Will you be my future or just an escape?
Love me, love me, love me

[Pre-Chorus]
You'll never get to Heaven on a night like this

[Chorus]
Those nights when your friends are gone
When you're holding on for someone to leave with
Those nights when you crave someone
To be there at dawn, to wake with, 'cause aren't we all just
Looking for a little bit of hope these days?
Looking for somebody you can wake up with?
Looking for a little bit of hope these days?
We are, we are

[Verse 2]
Pulling at my t-shirt, your hands everywhere
Rising, rising, rising
As you trip and fall, dragging me up the stairs
What's your, what's your name, now?
[Pre-Chorus]
You try to get to Heaven on a night like this
But you, you never get to Heaven on a night like this

[Bridge]
The lights, the lights, the lights
They cut a path across the room
The lights, the lights, the lights
A blinding look from me to you
And I'll be your rabbit in the headlights
We'll never get to Heaven
I'll be your rabbit in the headlights
We'll never get to Heaven

We are, we are
[Outro]
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Yeah, yeah
From my brain

Genius Annotation

In a departure from the high energy of “Another Place”, taking place at 4:52 AM, “Those Nights” slows things down as the story of Doom Days continues. The time is now 5:46 AM and the party is over but Dan is still awake as the sun begins to rise. He has found a person to go home with but wonders if what they crave is a momentary escape or something more, someone to form a loving connection with. Although it is clear he does not know the person well, not even knowing their name, Dan resolves that what he truly wants is a companion to find hope in while the world around him appears to be falling apart.

The song’s instrumentation begins with a light and simple synth rhythm that eventually builds to a strong pulsing beat before quickly winding down to a dissonant tone as the song comes to an end. With occasional hints of saxophone and touches of intentionally sloppy keyboard playing, the song develops the “intimate and woozy” and “digital and organic” atmosphere the band was aiming for.

The song was released alongside a music video. To stay aligned with the atmosphere of the music, the video achieves an intimate feeling by taking place in a single small space while a camera slowly moves in all directions around the central “Doom Days” couch without cutting, achieving the intended woozy feeling. As the camera pans many messages are revealed, from more obvious ones like Dan’s ITMFA (Impeach The Motherfucker Already) pin and pro-refugee “Choose Love” shirt to more subtle symbols like a teardrop tattoo shaped like a text message or a tattoo of two people yelling at each other with megaphones. In addition, several references to the previously released music videos are made, including a blue eye stripe from “Quarter Past Midnight” and posters with lyrics from “Doom Days”. These references provide a sense of continuity to the visual aspect of the album, a reminder that the album tells a story taking place over a single night.

What did Bastille say about "Those Nights"?
Genius Answer

Those Nights might be my favorite song we’ve ever made. I wanted to build a track that felt like the end of the night; it’s woozy and aimless and blurry and maybe not really sure what’s going on, it’s the yearning for human contact. Rittipo came in and we listened to a lot of Bon Iver, he played us a lot of jazz and we sort of let him loose again. We wanted him to layer up an orchestra of different saxophones to create that slightly hazy nighttime warm hug of a feel. Also we got a gospel choir to come in and we used their vocals as a sample to feel like voices in your head.“
