I Am Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I sang a lullaby to help you go back to sleep
And I said a prayer so you'd have everything you need
You've never done the same for me

[Pre-Chorus]
And ooh
You like the way it burns, only when it hurts me
Ooh
I can't control the way you feel

[Chorus]
But I am a woman, I am a rebel
I am a god, I danced with the devil
I am a lover, I am a legend
If I am everything, why am I not everything to you?

[Post-Chorus]
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Why am I not everything to you?
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
If I am everything, why am I not everything to you?

[Verse 2]
Don't wanna go all in but too afraid to let me go
I guess devourin' all the power is all you've ever known
You're sittin' on an empty throne
[Pre-Chorus]
And ooh
Do you get off on holdin' me from my potential?
Ooh
Are you scared that I might bruise your ego?

[Chorus]
But I am a woman, I am a rebel
I am a god, I danced with the devil
I am a lover, I am a legend
If I am everything, why am I not everything to you?

[Bridge]
I am enough, I am enough
I am, I am everything
I am enough, I am enough
I am, I am everything

[Chorus]
I am a woman, I am a rebel
I am a god, I've danced with the devil
I am a lover, I am a legend
If I am everything, why am I not everything to you?

[Post-Chorus]
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Why am I not everything to you?
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
If I am everything, why am I not everything to you?

Genius Annotation

Written after the horrific Roe v. Wade overturn, on “I Am” Rexha explains how she is a multitude of things, but why is she not anything to this certain person, maybe men or the Supreme Court. Bebe says to Rolling Stone
“…sometimes I feel like women are treated as second-class citizens… It’s all about the men…” The song is a female empowerment track, and it goes from Rexha not feeling like she isn’t enough, to her convincing herself she is, by repeating “I am enough”.
