About

Genius Annotation

This demo of “Sorry” is a much more mellow, vulnerable version of the original album release which was defiant breakup song, a middle-fingered clap-back anthem about having strength and confidence in the midst of an otherwise serious and emotionally tugging breakup.

While the lyrics of “Sorry” takes a “sorry, not sorry” attitude in which Beyoncé insists that she isn’t even thinking about her problematic ex anymore. At this point in the album, Beyoncé seems sure she won’t be accepting any apologies any time soon – this version has an extremely real struggle of acceptance and difficulty in her voice – “less middle fingers up and more two lovers in an endless, melancholy game of emotional tag.”
