“A Shot in the Dark” is a regretful ballad expressing its narrator’s remorse over their handling of a now-broken relationship. The pop-rock anthem blends hard-hitting electric guitars with a pulsing synth beat.
The song notably featured in the Big Time Rush television show, prominently within the first season episode “Big Time Terror” (2010). In it, Kendall and James chant an insulting jingle in order to off-put an overly invasive Gustavo, which they later re-work into a true song and music video after their conflict is resolved.
This deep cut from the Minnesota hockey-heads was the only one never officially released in their real-life counterpart’s discography; the full recording surfaced years later, only as a result of fan leaks. Despite this, the band has performed it live, first on the 2014 Live World Tour (as a solo piano interlude from James Maslow) and again for the 2023 Can’t Get Enough Tour (as part of a five-leg medley).
