It’s literally two bootlegs stitched together, two live recordings—one from Brooklyn at Pioneer Works and one from LA at the Hollywood Palladium. It was purely improvised, and then we took it and made a song out of it. It does relate more to the spontaneous, structured improvisation of the first Big Red Machine record, but I think it’s also a link between the past and the future of whatever this is.

When first previewing the track on an Instagram livestream on April 4th, 2021, Justin Vernon said:
So this was the song that Aaron and I almost kept out from the record. It’s this weird combination of live stuff that’s perfect for right now on Instagram Live. It’s the only song with Naeem on it, and it’s this combo of live performances and recording from a studio that Aaron souped together, and it’s really good. It takes too long for Naeem’s part to come in, but you’ll get the idea.
Naeem Juwan Hanks, known as Naeem, is credited as one of the writers on Bon Iver’s “U (Man Like)” from their fourth LP i,i, while the track “Naeem” from the same album features a sample from Naeem’s “That Storm” (laterly reworked into “Us”) and was even named after the artist.
Justin Vernon features on “Simulation” from Naeem’s 2020 album Startisha. Vernon is also credited with providing additional instrumentation, and co-producing multiple tracks on the album.
Naeem is also notably signed to 37d03d, the record label created by Justin Vernon, the Dessner brothers, and Tom and Nadine Michelberger.
