Fire Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I've got a song on my heart, baby
She keeps me grooving, steady grooving
Got a lover on my mind
That keeps me wanting, steady wanting more

[Chorus]
There’s a fire, call the fireman
If you're in pain, baby, call a doctor
Don't be afraid to say "I need you"
I will understand

[Verse 2]
Baby love, pretty woman, walking down the way
If you get tired, use your soul power and you’ll find the way

[Chorus]
And if there's a fire, call the fireman
If you're in pain, baby, call the doctor
Don't be afraid to say "I need you"
I will understand

[Post-Chorus]
Help me understand

[Verse 3]
Oh, I long for your lovin', I can't get enough
When you tell me I can be there when you love again
[Chorus]
When there's a fire, call the fireman
If there is a pain, baby, call the doctor
Don't be afraid to say "I need you"
I will understand

[Post-Chorus]
Help me understand
Alright, help me understand you

[Bridge]
Smooth, smooth sailing, when I understand
Smooth, smooth sailing on the other side

[Chorus]
If there’s a fire, call the fireman
If you’re in pain, baby, call a doctor
Don't be afraid to say "I need you"
I will understand

Genius Annotation

“Fire” is the second single and fourth song off of Black Pumas' self-titled debut album. In the song, the narrator presents the longing (either emotional, sexual, or both) that a “lover on [his] mind” is experiencing as an emergency similar to a fire or a medical emergency, and presents himself as the solution to that emergency. Though he tries to present the emergency as her problem, it is clear that the longing is really his problem, and that she is the solution to it, rather than the other way around.

Musically, “Fire” features a spaghetti western inspired guitar riff, and the brass playing in the background could be inspired by Johnny Cash’s hit “Ring of Fire,” which also features heavy brass and also depicts love as a burning fire. Also, Jimi Hendrix has a song called “Fire,” and since a later song on Black Pumas is called “Touch the Sky,” this song could also be inspired by Jimi.
