Minimum Wage Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Yeah, I met you 'fore anyone knew my name
Playin' for pennies on the dive bar stage
Split an all-star special on our first date
In a Waffle House booth
Your daddy was cryin' when he gave you away
'Cause all those country songs I played
They didn't come with a 401k
But hey, I had you

[Chorus]
You can make a six-pack on the carpet
Taste like a million-dollar bill
You can make a one-bedroom apartment
Feel like a house up on the hill
You can make my truck out in the driveway
Roll like a cleaned up Cadillac
Girl, lookin' at you lookin' at me that way
Can make a man feel rich on minimum wage

[Post-Chorus]
Girl, your love is money, your love is money
Yeah, your love can make a man feel rich on minimum wage
Girl, your love is money, your love is money
Yeah, your love can make a man feel rich on minimum wage
[Verse 2]
You can give me a tab that's always open
Or give me a yacht parked out in the ocean
But all that keepin' up with the Jones'
It just ain't my style
Just give me some lights strung out in the yard
Give me a lawn chair under the stars
The top of the world's right where you are
'Cause every time you smile

[Guitar Solo]

Girl, your love is money, your love is money
Girl, your love can make a man feel rich on minimum wage

Genius Annotation

With strong vocals and powerful guitars, “Minimum Wage” is a song describing how the love of a partner is priceless.

Upon it’s live release on December 31, 2020, it was met with some backlash for what critics perceived as insensitive lyrics, given the financial and economic circumstances throughout the pandemic and Shelton’s high net worth.

Shelton later addressed critics and explained his intention behind the song:

I struggled for so long to get by. But at the end of the day, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Those days when the big struggle was, ‘Man, do I pay my rent or my electric bill, or do I just say screw it and go buy some beer?’ You had to decide because you didn’t have enough to go around. […] It’s literally a love song about how if times are tight and you ain’t got much money – as long as you have love and you’re happy – at the end of the day, that’s all any of us can really hope for. You got it if you got that. That’s all that matters.

What did Blake Shelton say about "Minimum Wage"?
Genius Answer

The number one reason I recorded that song is because I thought how fun it would be to do it live. And one step beyond that is I thought it would be a great show opener, because it’s got that super long intro that builds. I was like, ‘Oh my god, I can see some fog on the stage, and I come up on one of those stupid elevators, or whatever.’ You have all these little images in your mind of how you’re going to do it.
