Everybody Lost Somebody Lyrics

[Intro: Venturini]
The pain of waiting alone at the corner
Trying to get myself back home

I gotta get myself back home soon
I gotta get myself back home soon

[Verse 1: Antonoff]
I guess it's true
The only reason that I called you last night
It's the reason I been standing on a wire
It's this dream I keep having where I'm begging

[Pre-Chorus 1: Antonoff]
Just to give myself a break (Hey)
But there's nothing I wouldn't do to wake up and remember it
I wanna wake up and remember
So take my clothes, that's better

[Chorus 1: Antonoff]
I think pain is waiting alone at the corner
Tryna get myself back home, yeah
Looking like everybody
Knowing everybody lost somebody

I'm standing here in the cold and
I gotta get myself back home soon
Looking like everybody
Knowing everybody lost somebody
Everybody lost somebody
Everybody lost somebody

[Verse 2: Antonoff]
I waited 'til the night was over
Cursed the sun for coming up below her
Cashed the checks I had, I didn't own
Standing on the corner, God I wonder when

[Pre-Chorus 2: Antonoff]
I'll give myself a break (Hey)
But there's nothing I wouldn't do to settle up with Heaven
It's a debt I gotta settle in Heaven
Take my clothes, I'm begging

[Chorus 1: Antonoff]
I think pain is waiting alone at the corner
Tryna get myself back home, yeah
Looking like everybody
Knowing everybody lost somebody

I'm standing here in the cold and
I gotta get myself back home soon
Looking like everybody
Knowing everybody lost somebody

[Bridge: Antonoff]
I'm lost
I know that I'm lost
Lost in a world without you
I know that I'm lost
I know that I'm lost
Lost in a world without you

[Verse 3: Antonoff]
And there's a reason I wake up alone in strange places
A reason I see myself in a million faces
A reason I can't stop it all from changing
So come on, motherfucker, you survived

[Pre-Chorus 2: Antonoff]
You gotta give yourself a break (Hey)
But there's nothing I wouldn't do to settle up with Heaven
It's a debt I gotta settle in Heaven
Take my clothes, I'm begging

[Chorus 2: Antonoff]
Everybody lost somebody
Everybody lost somebody
Everybody lost somebody
Everybody lost somebody

[Outro: Venturini]
I gotta get myself back home soon
I gotta get myself back home soon

About

Genius Annotation

In an interview with Rolling Stone shortly after Gone Now’s release, Jack said that the album includes memories of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the death of his sister from cancer soon after. This song speaks specifically to those two tragedies.

That loss is a filter that goes through your whole life. It’s not about not moving on. It changes you. It changes your relationships, it changes how you see yourself, the way you see your work. I really wanted to be in all that as I made this album.

“Everybody lost somebody” was a popular saying after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, when it seemed as though every American was affected somehow. In contrast, the death of his sister was very personal. Everyone has experienced loss in some way, and this song speaks about dealing with the grief that comes afterwards.

About the song’s creation, Antonoff also said:

It was one of the first songs I wrote [for Gone Now,] and it started me off on a lot of concepts.
