The Disco Song (1974 Session) Lyrics

[Verses 1]
Once I had a love
And it was a gas
Soon turned out
To be a thing of the past

Ooh
Na-na-na na ah
Seemed like the real thing
But I was so blind
Mucho mistrust
Love's gone behind

[Chorus 1]
In between
What I find is pleasing
And I'm feeling fine
Love is so confusing
There's no peace of mind
If I fear I'm losing you
It's just no good
You're teasing like you do

[Verses 2]
Ooh, la la la la
Ooh toop do-do
Once I had a love
And it was a gas
Soon turned out
To be a pain in the ass
Seemed like the real thing
But I was so blind
Mucho mistrust
Love's gone behind

[Chorus 2]
Lost inside
Adorable illusion
And I cannot hide
I'm the one you're using
Plеase don't push me aside
Wе could have made it cruising, yeah
Riding high
On love's true to bluish light

Ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Til I found out
It's spinning the past

Once I had a love
And I found out
It's a pain in the ass
Ooh, ooh ooh-ooh
Ooh-ah-ooh-yah ah
Riding high on up to the bluish light
Love (is) to the bluish light

Ooh-ooh
Uh
Ooh-uh

Genius Annotation

Blondie’s breakthrough hit “Heart of Glass” would wear many faces, its first being “The Disco Song”, which sounds far from the energetic “I Feel Love” Disco we know today—let alone the finished product—but rather the earlier, easier disco. Stein and Harry knew it was not yet going to be a hit; this recording in particular feels unfinished not only in music but in lyrics, missing its titular line.

Guitarist Chris Stein recalls coming up with the progression on a multitrack tape recorder which he was borrowing:

In the summer of 1974, I wrote a song and referenced the catchy feel of “Rock the Boat” by the Hues Corporation which was a big hit then. Debbie and I began calling it “The Disco Song”.

  • Against the Odds, pg. 15

Meanwhile, Debbie Harry says of her writing process that it felt like “a very high school king of thing, of falling in and out of love and getting your feelings hurt. But instead of dwelling on the pain, the words sort of shrugged off the breakup, like, "Oh well, that’s the way it goes”(15).
