About

Genius Annotation

“SRXT” is the last song from A Weekend in the City and builds on a very light sound of glockenspiel and guitars before adding in drums and a crescendo.

The song itself is about depression and the feeling of suicide. According to Kele:

It was inspired by the fact that in 2005 two of my friends told me that they tried to kill themselves after leaving university. I thought that was really sad. These people had been through the education system and they decided life wasn’t really worth it. Opting out was more attractive than the idea of enduring a life.

The song’s title refers to the word “seroxat” with all the vowels taken out. Seroxat is the trade name for the antidepressant drug paroxetine which is used to treat a multitude of things from post traumatic stress disorder to panic disorders and depression. In the UK paroxetine came under fire after being prescribed to many under-18s which caused extreme suicidal behaviors.
