Voyager Lyrics

[Intro: Dacus & Baker]
Mmm, mmm

[Verse 1: Bridgers, Dacus & Baker]
It's a hundred and three in the Valley
Blacktop is meltin' on our shoes (Mmm)
And I don't mean to make it all about me (Mmm)
But I used to believe no one could love you like I do (Mmm)
And I'm startin' to think that it might be impossible not to (Mmm)

[Verse 2: Bridgers, Dacus & Baker]
There are days spent tangled up together (Mmm)
And sometimes, you let me read your mind (Ooh)
Then there are nights you say you don't remember
When you stepped on the gas and you asked if I'm ready to die (Mmm)
You thought I'd never leave and I let you believe you were right (Mmm)

[Verse 3: Bridgers, Dacus & Baker]
Walkin' alone in the city
Makes me feel like a man on the moon (Ooh)
Every small step I took was so easy (Mmm)

But I never imagined a dot quite as pale or as blue (Ooh)
You took it from me, but I would've given it to you (Mmm)

Genius Annotation

Bridgers first played “Voyager” solo at the O2 Academy Brixton on July 29, 2022, where it was introduced as a secret song and recording was discouraged. The full-band version debuted live on September 28, 2023 at Westville Music Bowl, where it was revealed as the third song from boygenius' second EP the rest.

The song is named after the Voyager 1 spacecraft, and references its 1990 photo of Earth, Pale Blue Dot. The photo was commissioned by NASA at the suggestion of astronomer and author Carl Sagan, and inspired his 1994 book of the same name.

The Bridgers-led track plays on themes of loss and disorientation in the wake of a chaotic relationship.

What did boygenius say about "Voyager"?
Genius Answer

It’s funny. I found a draft of that song — because it’s only three verses, really, it just had so many [versions of different] verses. I wasn’t excited to show it to people, I was just kind of, like, it was percolating, and then, by the time it was these three stanzas, I was just trying to show it to everyon and really proud of it. I’m really glad it’s a boygenius song.
