Get High Lyrics

[Verse 1]
She hates her job, loves her kids
Bored with her husband
Tired of the same old list of things to do
So when the to-dos have all been done
She sits down at the kitchen table
And rolls herself a fat one

[Verse 2]
Smoke so sweet fills the air
She maybe ought to crack a window
But all she can do is stare at the paint
That's been peeling off the walls
A couple tokes and her troubles
Don't seem all that tall

[Chorus]
You know life will let you down
Love will leave you lonely
Sometimes the only way to get by
Is to get high

[Verse 3]
She laughs out loud at who she used to be
A girl who'd a looked down on
A woman smoking weed in her kitchen
Sometimes she misses them younger days
Seeing the world through rose-colored glasses
Instead of this purple haze
[Chorus]
You know life will let you down
Love will leave you lonely
Sometimes to only way to get by
Is to get high

[Instrumental Break]

[Verse 4]
So she tucks her kids in at night
Kisses her husband, turns off the light
And talks to God
Says Lord, help me accept what I cannot change
But until I learn to do that
Thanks for the Mary Jane

[Chorus]
'Cause you know life will let you down
Love's gonna leave you lonely
Sometimes the only way to get by
Is to get high
Yeah, sometimes the only way to get by
Is to get high

About

Genius Annotation

Starting off with an echoey, sinister-sounding dobro solo, “Get High” tells the story of a jaded housewife and her longing to escape her mundane marriage and restrictive routine by smoking cannabis.

The song’s subject matter and writing style is typical of Brandy Clark, whose songs commonly focus on the “dark comedy” of everyday struggles and the unhealthy coping mechanisms (often sex, alcohol, and drugs) that plague the victims of these struggles. “Get High,” in particular, was inspired by the real-life story of a peer who Brandy had graduated high school with.

Standing out as one of very few songs in Brandy’s discography to be written solely by her, Brandy has admitted that she originally wrote the song just to “entertain herself,” and that in terms of convincing other artists to record the unorthodox work, “nobody would touch it.” The song, however, accumulated extra significance after Brandy’s frequent and trusted co-writer Shane McAnally complimented “Get High” as being her “best song.” The song remains a staple in Brandy’s live sets, even nine years after its initial release.
