heavy metal Lyrics
I woke up in a warehouse but the label had fell off
Just minding my own meltdown
It was then I heard the cannibals, cannibals
They said, "Hey, kid"
[Pre-Chorus: Oli Sykes & Rahzel]
You got that something special, it's now or never
You wanna live forever, it's now or never
You know what we want, you should give it to us
It's now or never, but there's no pressure (Baby)
[Chorus: Oli Sykes]
And I keep picking petals
I'm afraid you don't love me anymore
'Cause a kid on the 'gram in a Black Dahlia tank
Says it ain't heavy metal
(And that's alright, that's alright)
[Verse 2: Oli Sykes]
I tried to do a head count but I cut off all the crusts
Said they liked it better curly (Yeah)
Then they gut me like an animal, animal
They said, "Hey, man"
[Pre-Chorus: Oli Sykes & Rahzel]
You had that something special, it's now or never
Let's keep it quintessential, it's now or never
You know what we want, why not give it to us?
It's now or never, but there's no pressure (Baby)
So I keep picking petals (I keep picking petals)
I'm afraid you don't love me anymore (You don't love me anymore)
'Cause a kid on the 'gram in a Black Dahlia tank
Says it ain't heavy metal
Yeah, I keep picking petals (I keep picking petals)
Got my heart and my head all in the wars
'Cause some kid from A&R in a Patagonia
Says he don't really get it, no
[Bridge: Rahzel]
*Beatbox*
[Chorus: Oli Sykes]
So I keep picking petals
All I wanna know, do you love me anymore?
'Cause some kid on the 'gram said he used to be a fan
But this shit ain't heavy metal
(And that's alright)
And I keep picking petals
I'm afraid you don't love me anymore (You don't love me anymore)
'Cause a kid on the 'gram in a Black Dahlia tank
Says it ain't heavy metal
Yeah, I keep picking petals
I'm afraid you don't love me anymore (You don't love me anymore)
'Cause some kid on the 'gram said he used to be a fan
But this shit ain't heavy metal
About
“heavy metal” features The Roots beatboxer Rahzel, the song is Oliver Sykes directly talking to the so-called “hipster” fans who’ve complained about the band moving away from their heavy sound to a more pop-oriented sound. Also, the song talks about the band’s trajectory since signing with their first label to now. Oli commented about the band’s direction in an now-deleted Instagram post:
i love how much this record is polarising peeps. Hasn’t been like this since we released suicide season. A lot of kids were quick to shit all over it.. because it was something very different from the scene we was in.. I 100% support and encourage people’s true opinions and if you are someone who’s only a fan of metal & hardcore with no exceptions, you are well within your right to hate this :) but if you are open to more.. all I’m saying is if you judged this record after 1 listen, maybe go give it another 2. I’m pretty confident you’ll surprise yourself… But it’s so exciting to of made a record that makes people feel so much.. it feels so Bring Me The Horizon again. Thankyou for that. And if your loving the record please, stream it on repeat, like, 24/7 :)

Rahzel is a beatboxer from The Roots. We had this demo for ages, and the beat was so crazy and heavy it sounded like a beatboxer. I was like, “If we got an actual beatboxer on it, that’d be sick.” Back when the internet first became big, there was this viral video on Limewire of him beatboxing, so we got in touch and he was up for it. The title is completely ironic—a nod to how we’re completely not heavy metal. There’s a little five-second clip at the end of the track that’s the heaviest we’ve sounded in years.
