Video Killed the Radio Star Lyrics

I heard you on the wireless back in '52
Lying awake intently tuning in on you
If I was young it didn't stop you coming through

I saw your picture in the magazines I read
Imagined footlights on the wooden face ahead
Sometimes I felt you were controlling me instead

I met your children
What did you tell them?

Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
Pictures came and took your heart
Mmm, yeah

And now we meet in an abandoned studio
We hear the playback and it seems so long ago
And you remember how the jingles used to go

You were the first one
You were the last one

Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
In my mind and in my car
We can't rewind, we've gone too far
Oh yeah

Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
In my mind and in my car
We can't rewind, we've gone too far
Pictures came and took your heart
Put the blame on VTR

Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star

About

Genius Annotation

The original version of the song that would later become a hit by the Buggles, this version of “Video Killed the Radio Star” was recorded by songwriter Bruce Woolley along with his band, The Camera Club. This version features a young Thomas Dolby on keyboards, and has more of a rock and post-punk feel than the Buggles' new wave/synthpop take on the song. It also has slightly different lyrics, and lacks the characteristic “oh-a oh-a” hook that made the Buggles' version a hit.
