1994 Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I'm trying to forgive myself for things I didn't do
For words I didn't say and things I didn't choose
Spending every day decomposing in my room
I'm not okay, but there's nothing I can do

[Verse 2]
I'm tryna love the person I was when I was born
Hating on a kid doesn't serve me anymore

Sylvanians making stories on the floor
And my mom and dad in love like it's 1994

[Chorus]
Say you're comin' around
I need you, lately everything's been getting me down
Yeah, the kids are grown up, I feel like I'm stuck
But I don't wanna catch up right now

[Verse 3]
I'm tryna get a better sense of what I'm worth
'Cause I've been on the fence and in thе dirt
Taking it easy
But I forgot I have a job and nothing evеr stops so

[Chorus]
Say you're comin' around
I need you, lately everything's been getting me down
Yeah, the kids are grown up, I feel like I'm stuck
But I don't wanna catch up right now
[Instrumental Break]

[Chorus]
Say you're comin' around
I need you, lately everything's been getting me down
I broke a glass on the floor, it was the last straw
It's like I woke up on the wrong side of town
Say you're comin' around
I need you, lately everything's been getting me down
I felt so much older than the kids 'round the corner
But I feel so much younger now

[Outro]
Overtook them all and slowed back down
Blamed a child in a daisy crown

About

Genius Annotation

“1994” demonstrates Cavetown’s attempt to make peace with their younger self through a journey of self-worth, resentment, and self-love. In an interview with Warner Records about the album, Cavetown notes:

That song is about trying to allow yourself the same compassion and forgiveness you’d have for a little kid if they’d made some kind of mistake, instead of beating yourself up over it.

“1994” was first performed on June 29, 2022 at The Forum when opening for Bleachers.

I find it hard to connect myself now to past versions of myself. They feel very separate. But if a child was stood in front of you, there are some things people say to themselves that you would never say to a child. Why is it different when it’s you? I think that’s important to remember. It’s such a simple concept, but it’s taken me a long time to internalise. It’s still a process, but I think it’s an important thing to learn to do.
