the stars Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I don't know where you start or where I end
I don't know when enough's enough
I don't know how to sleep in a cold bed
I'm trying not to think so much

[Chorus]
Maybe I want your love forever, is that so bad to say?
Maybe we're meant to be together if God had his way
And if you ask why I've stayed and I'll stay for all I know
It's 'cause the stars said so
It's 'cause the stars said so

[Verse 2]
I like the way that I look in your sweatshirt
And being told I am enough
And I know if it's right, then it won't hurt
I'm trying not to think so much, oh

[Chorus]
Maybe I want your love forever, is that so bad to say?
Maybe we're meant to be together if God had his way
And if you ask why I've stayed and I'll stay for all I know
It's 'cause the stars said so
It's 'cause the stars said so

Genius Annotation

“the stars” is a slow acoustic ballad and the final track of collaborative album brent ii, sung by Chelsea Cutler in a vulnerably soft voice. Its story follows “please,” another song from predecessor album brent, which depicts the hopelessly final moments of a relationship. Now Chelsea, caught in the aftermath of heartbreak, struggles to redefine her identity.

The title of the track derives from a cultural association of stars with divine symbols, as Chelsea wants to believe that her initially-good relationship was meant to be, as God intended. After their breakup, she has must grapple with the tragic question of if their love was “written in the stars” – that is, if she and her partner were truly fated to stay in love.

What did Chelsea Cutler say about "the stars"?
Genius Answer

For the first time in my life, I felt like there was validity behind the notion of wanting forever with someone—or the idea that you keep waking up every day and you still are surprised that you want to be with this person. In previous relationships, it was really easy to dismiss those things we all love to hear as just being words. We love hearing and saying things like, ‘Oh, we’re meant to be. It’s written in the stars.’ You don’t really mean it until you mean it, and I think it was the idea of, ‘Oh, maybe I really am starting to believe in this type of stuff.’
