Clash? Lyrics

[Chorus]
Everyone raps but say they don't battle rap
Any likkle funny chat, Chippy ain't having that
Yo where the money at? I be in my money bag
I just looked at my wrist, I got time today, yeah
Man get the pepper, sky that dweller

Me, I'm a real good feller
Just minding my business, stop that I'll stopped this
Fuck all the watches, watch this (Timeless)

[Verse]
Air Max or a Air Force one?
Serve and racket, Wimbledon
Rappers get up and pretend they're into tennis, coconut sober up

Contradictions, stop the cap
You don't battle rap, why drop and call it "Clash"?

I don't care what watch been bust
I was clashing when they were on
Daytonas, Yaughties, Subs
I had them all but what's that mean?
Man got a watch for every day of the week but they're still watchin' me

About clash, you won't survive
Sneaky features, come outside

Can't lie I can't teach you about drillings
But - I'll teach you about Grime
Having none, not from one
Anyone, everyone
Let him indirect on your song
Hole-in-two, all from (One)
Bitches
Bet they sleep in thongs
You know savage? Fenty ones
See Chip when I come through savage
Bitch, it's more like 21 (Twenty one)

At speed, three, two, one
Then repeat, then repeat
Guess that means, more than one
More than two? More than fun

2018 they wanna increase stop-and-search cah black kids dying ain't fun (Oooh)
Now it's zombies and ride-outs
Guess it's 2021

Plus, I live in his head rent-free
So miss me with the bailiff ones
Dum dum, knocking at your forehead from the inside, it's me!
You can hold this, son

Put these spitters all in check
All you'll hear is, disrespect
Indirects, what, for me?
Don't insult my intellect
Intercept, interject, into grime, into sets
Into dubs, into sends
They use grime, then neglect
I've been ready, I've been heavy, I've been steady
I love Headie

About shelling? I've been shelly
Since back when Tinchy, was with Benny
About hits? This is a hit
I had hits, when you were kids
I've had hits, since you're big

Hangman, bumba lyrical lynch
Why you rapping about zombie knives?
Stop the lies
Bare cap man are living nice

Zombie guys, kill spitters when I zombie slide
About Aston, you niggas ain't got my drive

Genius Annotation

“Clash?” is the third chapter of the beef between friends-turned-rivals Chip and Croydon MC Stormzy. In October 2020, Chip sent the first direct shots with his tracks “Killer MC” and “Flowers”, in retaliation to Stormzy pulling up to his house.

This diss-track is a response to Dave’s new single “Clash” which featured Stormzy on the 9th of July. A few lines in the song were alleged to be subliminals towards chip, such as

My bros don’t chat, we just wear all-black on a blend-in one
Man are talkin' war, don’t know ‘bout war 'til you end in one

This track was written, recorded, and released in under 24-hours.

In the song, Chip questions Stormzy’s legitimacy as an MC due to avoiding a direct clash with Chip, and addresses violent lyrics as opposed to reality.

Genius Answer

In October 2020, Chip released his first direct shots at Stormzy with “Flowers” (and the accompanying “Killer MC”). The pair were previously very good friends, with Stormzy even collaborating with Chip on “I’m Fine” in 2014 and “Hear Dis” in 2015.

Rumblings came that the pair were going back and forth following the release of the track “Waze” from Chip’s 2020 collaboration project with Young Adz & Skepta: Insomnia. Many listeners perceived Chip’s verse to be aimed at Stormzy, particularly due to the reference of Stormzy’s epithet the ‘King of Grime’:

You ain’t been platinum, silver or gold, you ain’t even been bronze, you div (‘Low it)
You ain’t even done ten years in this ting
'Round here we don’t hear you’re a king, man will take your throne (Yeah)

However, Chip may have instead been responding to fellow grime MC Mez, who had dissed chip in “Go” in May 2019, and “King of Grime” in February 2020. This would make sense, because Stormzy has been around for 10 years and has earned platinums, silvers, and golds, whereas Mez has not. Mez also has used the epithet ‘King of Grime’, hence the title of his diss track.

Nothing was confirmed at the time on either parts on whether or not this was a send. Regardless, Stormzy perceived it as a diss aimed at him and seemingly sent shots back at Chip through his Tion Wayne & Dutchavelli feature on “I Dunno”. He came after the sales of Insomnia and responded to the rumours of Chip’s send:

Is he sending for me? I dunno
What them boy there sell first week? I dunno (Boy, boy)

Wait, look, I thought I heard shots but the shoe don’t fit

After his verse became an attention grabber on social media the night of it’s release, Chip was trending on Twitter, in which he played it off with a rhetorical question.

On the 7th of October, mere minutes before the drop of Flowers, Chip released a video from June taken by his sister of Stormzy and three others leaving Chip’s house after trying to pull up on him. This was context on what this diss-track was going to be about.

From what the lyrics in this diss-track suggests Chip was not home and it was Chip’s brother (who is fresh from prison for a kidnapping and on license) & his sister who were at home at the time. The latter grabbing a kitchen knife to protect herself from Stormzy and his friends.

On the 15th January, 2021, Stormzy and Ghetts released the song “Skengman”, which some claimed contained some indirect lyrics aimed towards Chip:

Look, I love a real-life encounter
It’s funny on the phone you’re a shouter

This was followed very quickly by Chip’s “10 Commandments”, a third direct-diss track aimed at Stormzy, released the day after.

However, there was still no direct reply from Stormzy and on the 9th of July 2021, Stormzy and Dave released “Clash” which, again, was claimed to contain some lyrics which were indirectly aimed at Chip. Chip responded, within 24 hours, with a fourth diss track – “Clash?”. The song is produced by Zeph Ellis (also known as Dot Rotten, who had also previously released dissed tracks aimed at Stormzy in 2020.
