Man on the Moon Lyrics

Mott the Hoople and the Game of Life
Andy Kaufman in the wrestling match
Monopoly, Twenty-One, checkers and chess
Mister Fred Blassie in a breakfast mess
Let's play Twister, let's play Risk
See you in heaven if you make the list
See you in heaven if you make the list

Now, Andy, did you hear about this one?
Tell me, are you locked in the punch?
Hey, Andy, are you goofing on Elvis?
Hey, baby, are we losing touch?

If you believеd they put a man on the moon
Man on the moon
If you bеlieved there's nothing up his sleeve
Nothing is cool

Moses went walking with the staff of wood
Newton got beaned by the apple good
Egypt was troubled by the horrible asp
Mister Charles Darwin had the gall to ask

Now, Andy, did you hear about this one?
Tell me, are you locked in the punch?
Hey, Andy, are you goofing on Elvis?
Hey, baby, are you having fun?
If you believed they put a man on the moon
Man on the moon
If you believed there's nothing up his sleeve
Nothing is cool

Here's a little agit for the never-believer
Here's a little ghost for the offering
Here's a truck stop instead of Saint Peter's
Mister Andy Kaufman's gone wrestling
Yeah, Mister Andy Kaufman's gone wrestling
(Uh, Mister Andy Kaufman's gone wrestling)

Now, Andy, did you hear about this one?
Tell me, are you locked in the punch?
Hey, Andy, are you goofing on Elvis?
Hey, baby, are we losing touch?

If you believed they put a man on the moon
Man on the moon
If you believed there's nothing up his sleeve
Nothing is cool, nothing is cool
Nothing is cool
Nothing is cool (Nothing is cool)

If you believed
If you, if you believed
Man on the moon

Genius Annotation

!!!’s cover of R.E.M.’s hit “Man on the Moon” is a complete re-imagining of the song that bears virtually no similarity to the original, turning the song into a funky house track with an entirely different melody and rhythm. While the lyrics remain intact, the most notable deviation is the removal of the repeated “yeah"s after every line in the verses and bridge, which gives this version a more fast-paced feel by cutting out the filler lyrics.

The cover was initially released on September 8, 2021 as the B-side to !!!’s cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car”, another ‘90s hit. It was later revealed to be a track on the band’s ninth album Let It Be Blue.

The backing vocals are provided by !!!’s female vocalist Meah Pace, who is credited as a featured artist on the track.

Genius Answer

REM was known as the killer house party band in Athens, years before they became MTV darlings. We have re-imagined their hit ‘Man on the Moon’ as something they would play at those house parties, in the thick of the James Brown/Ohio Players sample era.
