Don’t Make It Harder on Me Lyrics

[Intro]
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh

[Verse 1]
I need you to stop lookin' at me like that
We are just friends now
You already had your chance
So I need you to stop sayin' the things you say
I don't wanna regret, no
The reason I didn't stay

[Pre-Chorus]
If you keep actin' so sweet
I might just wake up and leave
This boy that I pinky swore
We'd be together for sure
I can't be thinking of you
When I'm alone with my boo
If you smile at me again
I may do somethin' stupid

[Chorus]
Don't make it harder on me
Don't make it harder on me
I told you not to love me
And now you're growing on me
Don't make it harder on me
Don't make it harder on me
I told you not to want me
But you don't listen to me
And you never did
[Post-Chorus]
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Never did, never did (Ooh, ooh)

[Verse 2]
Why did we stop bein' together now?
Oh, I just remembered
How many girls you had
So you need to stop bein' so nice to me
'Cause a part of me has moved on
But a part of me is so weak

[Pre-Chorus]
If you keep actin' so sweet (So sweet)
I might just wake up and leave (Leave)
This boy that I pinky swore
We'd be together for sure
I can't be thinking of you
When I'm alone with my boo
If you smile at me again
I may do somethin' stupid

[Chorus]
Don't make it harder on me (Don't make it harder)
Don't make it harder on me
I told you not to love me
And now you're growing on me
Don't make it harder on me
Don't make it harder on me
I told you not to want me
But you don't listen to me
And you never did
[Post-Chorus]
Ooh, ooh
Oh, oh (Ooh)
Oh, oh (Ooh)

[Outro]
Don't make it harder
Don't make it harder on me
Harder for me
And you never did

About

Genius Annotation

With production that contains a happy lighthearted feel, “Don’t Make It Harder On Me” tells a story of love and the loss within it. It is a prime example of what it feels like to leave a person and thinking it was for the better. The feeling of moving on to someone new while also having second thoughts about the person you left behind. These second thoughts remind you so much of all the good times, that you almost forget all the hurt they caused you as well. In the end this person moves forward and the girls do as well, as Chloe says to close the song, “And you never did.”

We wrote this with our good friend Nasri and this amazing producer Gitty, and we were all in the studio, and I believe Halle really inspired this song. She was going through a situation where she was involved with someone, and there was also someone else trying to get her attention, and we kind of just painted that story through the lyrics: You’re in this wonderful relationship, but there’s this guy who just keeps getting your attention, and you don’t want to be tempted, you want to be faithful. And it’s like, “Look, you had your chance with me. Don’t come around now that I’m taken. Don’t make it harder on me.” I love it because it feels so old-school. We wanted the background to feel so nostalgic. Afterwards, we added actual strings on the record. It just feels so good—every time I listen to it, I just feel really light and free and happy.
