The second track on Christina Aguilera’s 1999 self-titled debut album, and the second single from the album. Written by Shelley Peikin and producer Guy Roche, “What a Girl Wants” is about an independent, strong woman who knows what she wants from a relationship, both sexually and emotionally.
The single version is a more upbeat version than the original one featured in the first pressing of Aguilera’s debut record, which is a slower version. The “single/remixed” version was only included in the second pressing. In order to achieve a wider audience, lyrics were also changed during the second verse and bridge, which was allegedly written by Aguilera.
It was her second consecutive #1 single in the U.S. after her debut single “Genie in a Bottle”, continuing her rise to superstardom.
