Counting Cars (OneRepublic Parody) Lyrics

[Intro]
Lately I've been, I've been losing sleep
Driving to all the spots that we could be
But lately I've been, I've been praying hard
Said no more counting miles, we'll be counting cars
Yeah we'll be counting cars...

[Verse 1]
I see this life
Like a winding road
Take my keys and head for home
In my face is flashing signs
Exit now and ye shall find
Old, but it's not that old
New, but it's not that bold
And I don't think that cars are sold
On just going where we're told

[Pre-Chorus]
And I, feel something so wrong
By doing the right thing
And I, feel something so right
By doing the wrong thing
Couldn't lie, couldn't lie, couldn't lie
Everything that crashes makes me wanna drive
[Chorus]
Lately I've been, I've been losing sleep
Driving to all the spots that we could be
But lately I've been, I've been praying hard
Said no more counting miles, we'll be counting cars

[Verse 2]
I can feel your love, feel it burn
Down this highway, every turn
Hope is our four letter word
Take that car and watch it burn
Old, but it's not that old
New, but it's not that bold
And I don't think that cars are sold
On just going where we're told

[Pre-Chorus]
And I, feel something so wrong
By doing the right thing
And I, feel something so right
By doing the wrong thing
Couldn't lie, couldn't lie, couldn't lie
Everything that crashes makes me wanna drive

[Chorus]
Lately I've been, I've been losing sleep
Driving to all the spots that we could be
But lately I've been, I've been praying hard
Said no more counting miles, we'll be counting cars
[Bridge]
Take that car and watch it burn
Sift in the ash the lessons I've learned
Hit the brakes and slow it down
Rise from the ashes the life I've found

Take that car and watch it burn
Sift in the ash the lessons I've learned
Hit the brakes and slow it down
Rise from the ashes the life I've found

[Chorus]
Lately I've been, I've been losing sleep
Driving to all the spots that we could be
But lately I've been, I've been praying hard
Said no more counting miles, we'll be counting cars
Lately I've been, I've been losing sleep
Driving to all the spots that we could be
But lately I've been, I've been praying hard
Said no more counting miles, we'll be counting cars

[Outro]
Take that car and watch it burn
Sift in the ash the lessons I've learned
Hit the brakes and slow it down
Rise from the ashes the life I've found
Take that car and watch it burn
Sift in the ash the lessons I've learned
Hit the brakes and slow it down
Rise from the ashes the life I've found

About

Genius Annotation

From Tom Petty’s “Runnin' Down a Dream” to Taylor Swift’s “Our Song” to American Authors' “What We Live For” to OneRepublic’s “Kids” to Bebe Rexha’s “Meant to Be,” automobiles have long been used in songwriting as symbols and metaphors of freedom, adventure and one-on-one relationships.

I am not in any way mocking “Counting Stars” with this; it’s the one song that introduced me to 1R and showed me their style at a time when I was just starting to pay attention to pop music and didn’t really know what to look for. PB and I both like 1R; I am a particularly big fan myself.

The theme is that of someone who enjoys traveling and cross country driving, exploring new places and finding fulfillment in the adventure. But they’ve begun to rethink their priorities, and have decided they’ll settle down and count the cars going by instead of driving them.

Genius Answer

I wrote this all by myself in less than an hour. PB is busy with school and real life. He approved it, though. I posted it to our joint account partly because I wanted to share the creation process with him and partly because I already have one parody on my own account.
