Toronto 2014 Lyrics

[Chorus: Daniel Caesar & Mustafa, Daniel Caesar]
I can hear the bells ringin' (Bells ringin'), remindin' us why (Remindin' us why)
We're still here singin' (We're still singin'), it's Father Time
We're stuck in the Matrix (Stuck in the Matrix), livin' a lie (Livin' a lie)
I'm not afraid to die (Oh, oh)

[Verse 3: Daniel Caesar, Daniel Caesar & Mustafa, Mustafa]
You know, Stockholm, long roads, on go
You can't even reach me
Just know, whenever you need me, we'll figure it out
Look up and you'll see me, and I'll be around (Yeah)
'Cause when I'm home, I'm lost, let's go make it look easy
Oh, take it easy on me, it's still my city, it's still my city

Genius Annotation

Toronto 2014 is a collaboration of Daniel and Mustafa the Poet, who has worked with Daniel Caesar before on other songs.

Toronto 2014 is an allusion to the start of Daniel’s career, Praise Break, which he released in 2014. After all this time, Daniel pays homage to his days of seeking stardom, and now sings of his journey and accomplishment.

It was just a time of freedom, I just could do whatever I wanted. In that time, I was miserable for so many reasons, but in retrospect, I think that could’ve been the happiest I’ve been.

Genius Answer

That song was like years in the making, an earlier version was like 4-5 years ago. It didn’t make his album, and I picked it up because every time I start an album, I go back to old songs that I couldn’t figure out and that I really love. So, I was like retracing my steps, so I found [Toronto 2014], picked it up, and started cooking in Stockholm.
