Drug Me Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I don't want to think
Don't make me care
I wanna melt in with the group
I need the balls
To leap out of my shell
And let go with my friends
Can't come up with
Anything I want to do
I need a project I can finish
My brain needs some stimulation

[Chorus]
Drug me!
Drug me!
Drug me!
Drug me!

[Verse 2]
I'm so fucking tired
I gotta stay awake and get to work
I'm runnin' late
I gotta make it through the day
And make my time go by
TV and the stereo and girls are lots of fun
I want the max
I relate better loaded
"Got to see that movie stoned"
[Chorus]
Drug me!
Drug me!
Drug me!
Drug!

[Bridge]
Drug me with natural vitamin C
Drug me with pharmaceutical speed
Drug me with your sleeping pills
Drug me with your crossword puzzles
Drug me with your magazines
Drug me with your fuck machines
With a fountain of fads
More rock-and-roll ads
Drug me, drug me, drug me, me, me!

[Verse 3]
Finally off of work
Unwind and watch the ball game at the bar
Another potato chip weekend
Is here at last
Go away, go away, go away, go away
Go away, leave me alone
So I can't see myself
[Chorus]
Drug me!
Drug me!
Drug me!
Drug me!

Genius Annotation

‘Drug Me’ is a 1980 song from the Dead Kennedys' debut album Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables. This landmark record was a defining moment in the history of hardcore punk, with its tongue-in-cheek lyrics poking fun at American society, government and consumerism.

While the album’s more successful songs like ‘Kill the Poor’ and ‘Holiday in Cambodia’ mocked the 1%’s disdain for those lesser fortunate, ‘Drug Me’ is a frenzied assault on the masses for their willingness to rely on the other kinds of drugs – mindless entertainment, consumerist products and antidepressants – to avoid facing the harsher truths of the world.

Jello Biafra, the band’s frontman, delivers the lyrics at breakneck speed to simulate a person on a drug, possibly an amphetamine (aka speed).
