I Dreamt We Spoke Again Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I dreamt we spoke, I dreamt we spoke again
It'd been so long, it'd been so long, my mind filled in the blanks
I dreamt we spoke, I dreamt we spoke again
It'd been so long, it'd been so long, your voice was like a ghost

[Chorus 1]
In my head
In my head

[Verse 2]
Only in, yes, only in a dream
Is anything, is anything the way it used to be?
I dreamt we spoke, I dreamt we spoke again
But when I awoke, when I awoke, I could not remember

[Chorus 2]
Anything you said
Anything you said
Anything you said
Anything you said

Genius Annotation

On “I Dreamt We Spoke Again” Ben Gibbard revisits the idea of a ghost, a theme that has been a common thread throughout past Death Cab albums. However, in this song the ghost is a metaphor for fond and bitter-sweet memories.

The song is an upbeat ballad, reminiscent of Death Cab’s early works and features the band’s signature sound. Ben described the song’s sound as,

a Death Cab-ism– upbeat song with sad lyrics. It’s the only thing we’re famous for.

“I Dreamt We Spoke Again” is the opening track and second official single released from Death Cab For Cutie’s ninth studio album Thank You for Today.

The track was premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio show:

Genius Answer

On Consequence of Sound, Ben Gibbard shared about the song,

I wanted to write [the song] without any context. There’s no indication of what the relationship is with the person who is being sung to in the song. I wanted to present it in that fashion so that it was left open to listener interpretation. It could be someone who was once a partner, or it could be a loved one who’s passed, or it could be a friend that you haven’t spoken to in years. It wasn’t necessarily connected to death specifically, but that could be inferred if one kind of had somebody in their life that was no longer with them.
