Talking Bird Lyrics

[Intro]
1, 2, 3, 4...

[Verse 1]
Oh, my talking bird
Though you know so few words
They're on infinite repeat
Like your brain can't keep up with your beak
And you're kept in an open cage
So you're free to leave or stay
And sometimes, you get confused
Like there is a hint that I am trying to give you

[Hook 1]
And the longer you think
The less you know what
To do

[Verse 2]
It's hard to see your way out
When you live in a house in a house
'Cause you don't realize
That the windows were open the whole time
But oh, my talking bird
Though your feathers are tattered and furled
I'll love you all your days
'Til the breath leaves your delicate frame

Genius Annotation

The 5th Track from Narrow Stairs uses a bird in a bird house as a way to describe a controlling, almost emotionally abusive relationship.

The owner tells themselves and the bird that they can do as the please, so long as they dont leave them. Telling them that they will love them and cherish them despite their flaws.

Even though this sounds romantic, the language used in this track is very akin to The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. In that story the husband treats his wife like a child; very similar to how the owner treats the bird.
