Blasphemous Rumours [Single Edit] Lyrics

[Verse 1: Dave Gahan]
Girl of sixteen, whole life ahead of her
Slashed her wrists, bored with life
Didn't succeed, thank the Lord
For small mercies

[Verse 2: Dave Gahan]
Fighting back the tears, mother reads the note again
Sixteen candles burn in her mind
She takes the blame, it's always the same
She goes down on her knees and prays

[Chorus: Dave Gahan]
I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God's got a sick sense of humour
And when I die, I expect to find him laughing

[Instrumental Interlude]

[Chorus: Dave Gahan]
I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God's got a sick sense of humour
And when I die, I expect to find him laughing

[Verse 3: Dave Gahan]
Girl of еighteen, fell in love with evеrything
Found new life in Jesus Christ
Hit by a car, ended up
On a life support machine
[Verse 4: Dave Gahan]
Summer's day as she passed away
Birds were singing in the summer sky
Then came the rain and once again
A tear fell from her mother's eye

[Chorus: Dave Gahan]
I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God's got a sick sense of humour
And when I die, I expect to find him laughing

[Chorus: Dave Gahan]
I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God's got a sick sense of humour
And when I die, I expect to find him laughing

[Chorus: Dave Gahan]
I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God's got a sick sense of humour
And when I die, I expect to find him laughing

[Chorus: Dave Gahan]
I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God's got a sick sense of humour
And when I die, I expect to find him laughing
[Chorus: Dave Gahan]
I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God's got a sick sense of humour
And when I die, I expect to find him laughing

Both A-side songs are from the album Some Great Reward.

The music video was directed by Clive Richardson.

Song information:
The verses to Blasphemous Rumours describe a 16-year-old girl who attempts suicide but fails. She experiences a religious revival but then Hit by a car / Ended up / On a life support machine. The chorus uses these incidents to conclude, I don’t want to start any blasphemous rumours / But I think that God’s got a sick sense of humour / And when I die, I expect to find him laughing. Like other songs on Some Great Reward, the song uses a dense sound with extensive sampled percussion.
When Depeche Mode announced that they were planning to release Blasphemous Rumours as a single, pushback from the religious community resulted, and consequently, the band decided as a compromise to release the single as a double-A side with Somebody.
