Ghosts of Our Past Lyrics

[Intro]
You and I a hundred times
Pickin a fight is it a crime?
Roll the dice make-up-your-mind
Roll the dice make-up-your-mind

[Verse: Derrival]
You and I
Find the night
A second time
Is it a crime?

To avoid the truth
And carry on
Acting like
Nothing’s wrong

[Pre Chorus]
You keep falling away
Falling away
I see your face in the rearview
I keep driving away
Driving away
I see your face in the mirror

[Chorus]
You
You and I know
This will not last
Getting caught in
In and out of
Ghosts of our past
(Ghosts of our past)
[Verse: Sarah Jeffery]
You and I
Kiss goodbye
Our normal lives
Is this a sign?

That you were right
To pick my fights
Instead of going
After every guy

[Pre Chorus: Both]
You keep falling away
Falling away
I see your face in the rearview
I keep driving away
Driving away
I see your face in the mirror

[Chorus: Both]
You
You and I know
This will not last
Getting caught in
In and out of
Ghosts of our past
(Ghosts of our past)
[Bridge: Both]
Where were you when I was alone?
Up on your throne of lies
I could see that the end was near
Inside those quiet eyes
Where were you when I was alone?
Up on your throne of lies
I could see that the end was near
Inside those quiet eyes

You keep falling away
Falling away
I see your face in the mirror

[Chorus]
You
You and I know
This will not last
Getting caught in
In and out of
Ghosts of our past
(Ghosts of our past)
You
You and I know
This will not last
Getting caught in
In and out of
Ghosts of our past
(Ghosts of our past)
You and I a hundred times
Pickin-a-fight is it a crime?
Roll the dice make-up-your-mind
Kiss goodbye our normal lives

You and I a hundred times
Pickin a fight is it a crime?
Roll the dice make-up-your-mind
Roll the dice make-up-your-mind

Genius Annotation

Ghosts of Our Past was the last song written for the album. We had Sarah Jeffery come in to do some backup vocals for other songs on the album and she did an amazing job. We decided to write one more song over the course of a couple days while we were in studio that Sarah would be featured on and it ended up being one of our favourite songs on the album.

The inspiration for Ghosts of Our Past came from the movie Drive. The song is about the relationship between Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan’s characters. They are in love but can’t be together because of outside forces which include people from their past.

The process of making Ghosts of Our Past was very fluid. Adam and Shane came up with the skeleton of the song over the course of a couple days and then the rest of the band filled in their parts. We worked with our longtime producer Ryan Worsley out of Echoplant (Dear Rouge, Said the Whale) to create the slick, polished sound that we wanted to go for with this song.
