“Afterglow” is the first solo single released by English singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran since the release of Divide in 2017. It is confirmed that “Afterglow” will not be featured on his upcoming albums.
The song is an acoustic mellow ballad about his wife, Cherry Seaborn Sheeran. In the song, Ed talks about living the moment with her who he wants to live all the days out with.

Ed posted on Instagram as the song was released, saying:
Afterglow is a song I wrote last year that I wanted to release for you. It’s not the first single from the next album, it’s just a song I love, and hope you love too. Enjoy!
The artwork is an original painting done by Ed post-tour in 2019.
Ed turned to painting as a new and different creative outlet after he’d finished touring his third album, Divide, to help him combat his feelings of uselessness.
On September 27th, 2019, Ed posted a photo of the painting on his Instagram. In the caption, he said:
Spent an entire month since tour ended painting, which I’ve never done before. Had so much fun doing it. If I’m honest I felt a bit useless once tour had ended, coz singing, writing and gigging is all I’ve ever known, so it’s nice to find a new way to be creative.
This particular painting would later become the cover art of his 2020 single.
