How Deep Is Too Deep Lyrics
I watch you while you dress, it's a quarter to one
I’m running out of moves, so I keep it undone
You like me in a mess 'cause I always come back to you
You cast me in your thriller just to cut the scene out
Sowing all the seeds, just to bring me a drought
You wanna wash me off, but you want me as your tattoo
[Pre-Chorus]
'Cause I’ve been holding it down, holding it down
Waiting for the blood to rise
And you've been keeping me 'round, keeping me 'round
Just so you can fantasize
[Chorus]
That you're doing nothing wrong 'cause you give me just enough
Waiting for another one you don't have to love
You hold me so tight, say it's getting too deep for you, but
How deep is too deep?
[Verse 2]
You’re sipping on my drink while you talk on the phone
I love your suit and tie and the way that you smoke
I stumble in your dreams, but I know you don’t want me to
No, no
'Cause I’ve been holding it down, holding it down
Waiting for the blood to rise
And you've been keeping me 'round, keeping me 'round
Just so you can fantasize
[Chorus]
That you’re doing nothing wrong 'cause you're doing just enough
Waiting for another one you don't have to love
You hold me so tight, say it's getting too deep for you, but
How deep is too deep?
Think you're doing something right 'cause you give me just enough
Waiting for another one you only have to touch
You hold me so tight, say it's getting too deep for you, but
How deep is too deep?
[Bridge]
Oh, I could do better, baby, let's be honest
It's ironic, I know
I can find something deeper baby, but
How deep is too deep?
(Ooh, how deep is too deep?)
(Ooh) How deep is too deep?
[Chorus]
Doing nothing wrong 'cause you're doing just enough
Waiting for another one you don't have to love
You hold me so tight, say it's getting too deep for you, but
How deep is too deep?
Think you're doing something right 'cause you give me just enough
Waiting for another one you only have to touch
You hold me so tight, say it's getting too deep for you, but
How deep is too deep?
How deep is too deep?
How deep is too deep?
About
Goulding speaks of a toxic relationship where she is given the ‘hot and cold’ treatment and feels very strongly that she’s being used to fulfil this man’s need for sex, control and power.
She feels as though she is expected to be perfect to remain in her position and that she’s replaceable. Goulding recognises this is not what she deserves and isn’t healthy but the dynamic of the relationship leaves her questioning how much love she should expect and give in a relationship.

I think I have licence to say things [in music] that I perhaps wouldn’t say in real life. I would never say to someone, ‘I can do so much better than you,’ which is a lyric in this song. I just wouldn’t. But at the same time, I feel like so many women need to be empowered with things like that, and need to understand not to settle for someone just because you need someone. Honestly, when I say things like that, I want to protect women, and I want them to sing out a line and be like, ‘Oh, you know what? I’m with this guy for the wrong reasons, and actually he just makes me feel like shit.’ I think that I definitely went through situations in my teens and my twenties where I was always desperate for something to be deeper and deeper, but then I couldn’t really figure out what that was. I guess all along, it was because I wasn’t actually feeling real love. I was just trying to make something more than what it was, and give it more substance. It’s really a song about passion and lust for someone that, actually, is just screwing you over.
