America Lyrics

Uhmmm uhmmm uhmmm hmmm hmmhmmhmmhmm
Uhmmm uhmmm uhmmm hmmm hmmhmmhmmhmm

"Let us be lovers, we'll marry our fortunes together"
"I've got some real estate here in my bag"
Hooooo-oo-oo-oo
So we bought a pack of cigarettes and Mrs. Wagner pies
And we walked off to look for America

"Kathy," I said as we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh
"Michigan seems like a dream to me now
It took me four days to hitch-hike from Saginaw
And I've gone to look for America"

Laughing on our bus
Playing games with the faces
She said the man in my gabardine suit was a spy
I said "Be careful, his bow tie is really a camera"

"Toss me a cigarette, I think there's one in the raincoat"
"We smoked the last one an hour ago"
Hooooo-oo-oo-oo
So I looked at the scenery, she read her magazine
And the moon rose over an open field

"Kathy I'm lost," I said, though I knew she was sleeping
"I'm empty and aching and I don't know why"
Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike
They've all come to look for America
All come to look for America
All come to look for America
All come to look for America
All come to look for America
Uhmmm uhmmm uhmmm hmmmMmmMmm Woo-oo

Genius Annotation

“America” by First Aid Kit was released as a Record Store Day exclusive on 28 November 2014.

It’s a cover of the original song with the same name, performed by Simon & Garfunkel, which was released in 1968. It’s a song from their fourth album Bookends, but was later released as a single in 1972 to promote the compilation album Simon & Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits.

Simon wrote the song, which is inspired by a road trip with his then-girlfriend Kathy Chitty in 1964. It’s about a young couple hitchhiking across the United States, in search for the true meaning of America.

The sisters played the song in their sets many times before and has become a fan favorite. They told TIME, where the music video was premiering, why the song is so magical for them:

We, who travel so much and have been around America so many times, can really relate to it. We somehow can’t get tired of performing this song. It just won’t happen. It’s always a highlight at our shows.

In 2012, the duo got the chance to perform the song for Paul Simon himself, during an award ceremony in Stockholm. They told TIME how it was to play in front of him:

[It was] terrifying, but amazing. We have huge respect for Mr. Simon as a songwriter and performer. It’s very scary to go up in front of someone you admire and sing their own song to them. It’s such a huge honor. You never know what they will think of your performance. There was also some pressure for us because the year before we performed for Patti Smith at the Polar Music Prize and she cried – so everyone was waiting for Paul’s reaction. He did give us a standing ovation in the end so it was a good night.
