Ferry Cross The Mersey
Ferry Cross The Mersey Lyrics
Hearts torn in every way
So ferry 'cross the Mersey
'cause this land's the place I love
And here I'll stay
And here I'll stay
People they rush everywhere
Each with their own secret care
So ferry 'cross the Mersey
'cause this land's the place I love
And here I'll stay
And here I'll stay
People around every corner
They seem to smile and say
They'll tell you, 'We don't care what you name is boy
We'll never send you away'
Send you away, Send you away, Send you away
So I'll continue to say
Here's where I always must stay
So ferry 'cross the Mersey
'cause this land's the place I love
And here I'll stay
And here I'll stay
'cause this lands the place I love
And here I'll stay
About
“Ferry Cross The Mersey” is FGTH’s cover of Gary Marsden’s 1964 hit. It appeared in full as a b-side to the band’s debut single “Relax” and later (shortened in length) on their debut album Welcome To The Pleasuredome as “Fury”.
It is a wild coincidence that Marsden’s band Gerry & The Pacemakers had their first three singles top the UK chart and their fourth reach #2 in the 1960s. Then FGTH, whose cover of Marsden’s song is the b-side of their first single – and are also from Liverpool, had the exact same thing happen: their first three singles topped the UK chart and their fourth reached #2 in the 1980s.

Holly Johnson explained:
That was Trevor (Horn)’s idea, I thought ‘What?’ and just laughed it off. Then I thought, ‘Don’t be so negative, just try it and if we don’t like it then throw it out.’ Well, he came up with this beautiful, amazing backing track that gave me a chance to sing rather than just shout.
