The inspiration for “Honestly” came from a recent breakup that I went through with a pathological liar. I was just so torn up about it and I realized how much my own mental state was affected, and how through that process I had questioned my own reality so many times where I was like, “Am I crazy? Are these things that he’s saying to me true and I’m not just in this planet?” That type of treatment and behavior really does make you feel crazy. It makes you question your self worth. Like I say in the song, it makes you question your sanity because if somebody that you trust and love so much is lying to you, and you want to believe them so much, then either they’re lying to you or you’re lying to yourself.
I wrote “Honestly” first as a really cheesy kind of Disney pop song, and then I wrote a really dark poem, and then I met with some amazing producers and we mashed the two together and made it into what it is today. You just got to make everything into art. That’s my motto of life; turn your pain, turn your sadness into art. Find a way to be grateful for the bad things that happen to you, and I think that’s the secret to happiness, honestly.
