The House We Never Built Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I broke another glass
In the house we never built
The winter is always cold enough
Cold enough to kill

[Pre-Chorus]
Just a little jasmine
Just a little salt in my wounds
What happens if I tell you
To tell the truth?

[Chorus]
Tell me you love her
And I'll be gone
Tell me you love her
And my heart was simply wrong
Just say the words and I'll turn around
I'll be gone without a sound
And burn this house to the ground

[Verse 2]
It's like I never left
The house we never built
I broke another mirror
Now there's 21 years left
[Pre-Chorus]
Just a little bad luck
Just a little salt in my wounds
Break it to me gently, gently

[Chorus]
Tell me you love her
And I'll be gone
Tell me you love her
And my heart was simply wrong
Just say the words and I'll turn around
I'll be gone without a sound
And burn this house to the ground
I'll burn it down

[Bridge]
Feel the heat on my face
See it go up in flames
I'll burn it down
Burn it into the ground

[Chorus]
Tell me you love her
And I'll be gone
Tell me you love her
And my heart was simply wrong
Just say the words and I'll turn around
I'll be gone without a sound
And burn this house to the ground

Genius Annotation

In “The House We Never Built,” Gabrielle Aplin is expressing her feelings for her old lover in a metaphor. “The House” Gabrielle refers to throughout the song symbolizes her relationships with her ex-lover.

After both she and her lover abandoned the house, she is left to wonder what would have happened if they had both stayed. What could they have done together? It isn’t what’s left behind that hurts her, its what they could have built if they had stayed. What would have been of the house they never built?
As she looks throughout the house and sees all the unfinished projects, she feels the need to burn whatever is left of the house to the ground.

Nobody is going to go back to admit that is over. The bricks have gone tired of waiting and the windows have shattered and nobody is no longer welcomed. In order to move on, she must burn down the house they never built.
