Mariana Trench Lyrics
What the fuck am I even hearing on the news?
I can't remember the last time we met, and I miss you
Oh, I just wanna run away, but I can't even move
I don't know how we get through the shit that we do, but we get through
[Verse 2]
I was watching Blue Planet
And the Mariana Trench
The darkness, it scared me, tightened up my chest
Sometimes, I get so low and deep but don't know if I'm gonna make it
But I remember there's life down in the darkest places
[Chorus]
Ooh, ooh-ooh
I don't know how we get through the shit that we do, but we get through
I don't know how we get through the shit that we do, but we get through
[Verse 3]
Found myself inside a search engine searching
For answers to my issues
Since when did I trust strangers on the internet before myself?
It's like I need somebody else to tell me which door I should run through
But why ask someone for directions to places they've never been to?
[Chorus]
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ah
I don't know how we get through the shit that we do
Hmm-ahh-ohh
I don't know how we get through the shit that we do, but we get through
Oh, I don't know how we get through the shit that we do, but we get through
[Outro]
Sometimes, I think about my life and how I've lived it
All the words I can't take back, I wish I made some better choices
I know it's heavy and you're carrying it, too
And I know that I can never understand, but I got you
And I know we haven't talked in years, but I love you
And I don't know how we get through the shit that we do, but we get through
About
“Mariana Trench” is a piano ballad about nature, human and otherwise. The title is a nod to the Blue Planet episode that Aplin watched about the Mariana Trench, the deepest oceanic trench on Earth. In the song—which was written in early 2021—Aplin connects the Blue Planet episode to her own feelings of isolation during England’s third COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and the reactions of other humans around the world:
People were going out of their way during the pandemic in a dangerous time to help people they didn’t even know, and I realised that if they can do that, I can pull myself up from whatever brain hole I’m in. [“Mariana Trench”] was about knowing that there’s life and light in the darkest of places if you go down deep enough to find it.

In an interview with The Line of Best Fit, Gabrielle explained that the song was inspired by a quote in Matt Haig’s The Comfort Book which had resonated with her:
The best thing about rock bottom is the rock part. You discover the solid bit of you. The bit that can’t be broken down further. The thing that you might sentimentally call a soul. At our lowest we find the solid ground for our foundation. And we build ourselves anew.
