About
“My Universe,” an uplifting pop-rock song about a difficult love, works as the second promotional single from Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres.
The track, written by Coldplay alongside BTS rappers, originally was made only for BTS, but the artists ended up performing it together. The chorus vocals sung together were recorded in April 2021 when Coldplay’s Chris Martin visited South Korea. The song marks the first collaboration between the two artists.
The rumors about the possible collaboration between Coldplay and BTS goes back to February 2021, when BTS surprised everyone covering Coldplay’s “Fix You” during their MTV Unplugged session. The performance gained worldwide recognition, and Coldplay took to Twitter to express their admiration for it. After this performance, fans of both bands expressed hope for cooperation, but the rumors truly sparked when Chris Martin was spotted at Incheon Airport in South Korea. The rumors continued when during the interview for the promotion of “Higher Power,” he addressed the rumors, saying: “I love them a lot and so if the right song came along, I wouldn’t ever say no.”
In July 2021, part of the song was leaked online, thus confirming the collaboration. BTS' label, BigHit Music, released a press statement about Coldplay’s upcoming new song that supposedly features BTS saying: “It’s hard to confirm,” convincing no one that the collaboration is not gonna happen. Through the following months both artists were still hinting at the collaboration, and Chris Martin even sang a fragment of “My Universe” (including the Korean verse) on The Kelly Clarkson Show (as was reported by an audience member) and hosted a conversation with BTS for their “Permission to Dance” Challenge on YouTube Shorts.
The song was announced officially on September 13, 2021, with the release press info from both groups.

We really don’t believe in any boundaries or separation of anything really, and so the song “My Universe” is about someone being told they can’t love a certain other person, or can’t be with this race, or they can’t be gay, whatever it might be. And we thought it would be good to sing this with BTS because maybe we’re not supposed to be together. And it turned out to be one of the most fun things ever. I went to Korea to be with them, it’s been amazing.
It had been in my mind for a while that someone had said BTS were wondering if we’d do a song for them or something like that. And then we started communicating with BTS and then went to Korea. It’s something you could look at so cynically, and we have at times, but anytime there’s actual communication or music between us, it just feels so good. So I unabashedly and unashamedly feel really grateful for the song, grateful for the person that inspired the song, and grateful for the people we sing it with.
