Genius Annotation

A hopeful-yet-bittersweet kick of a song as well as the start of a new era in Gerard Way’s music, “Millions” was the third single from Gerard Way’s debut solo album, Hesitant Alien, but the first solo material to be showcased to the public after the split of his former band, My Chemical Romance. Its lyrics were posted by Way in July 2013 after saying via Twitter that he dreamed he had posted them on an NME message board.

The initial single artwork was also previewed via Twitter in 2013. The song was played in full for the first time after a live interview as part of the 2013 GRAPHIC festival at the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia. In another Twitter reveal, Way noted that his brother, Mikey Way, sang the line “it was really me!,” in the second verse.

The music video for “Millions” was posted to YouTube on October 11, 2014. It features abstract mime-dancing and lo-fi production quality as a result of its being recorded on vintage equipment with director Jennifer Juniper Stratford.
