“Jesus He Knows Me” is the first song to be revealed from Ghost’s 2023 covers EP “Phantomime”. The band had used a marketing campaign, with the slogan “Jesus Is Coming”, to tease the single before it was released on Easter Sunday in 2023.
Originally released by Genesis in 1992, the song acts as a satire towards TV preachers who use their position to sell the idea of God to other people for profit, themselves being corrupt and imperfect and not following their own teachings.
The music video depicts fictional preacher Father Jim DeFroque manipulating people into giving money at the church he works at, before going rogue and spending that money on drugs, prostitutes and weapons.

Had it not been for Disturbed, I would say that ‘Land of Confusion’ would’ve been on the list as well, because it’s a really, really good song. But the reason I’m choosing these rather than an older Genesis track has nothing to do with me preferring the newer Genesis, when they became more of a pop band. It’s simply because those songs are a little bit more up for interpretation, whereas a lot of their old prog songs are not easy to interpret because of the grandiosity of the arrangements. And ‘Jesus He Knows Me’ felt like such a given. It felt super relevant, and it translated really well.
