Enemy (Solo Mix) Lyrics

[Intro]
Look out for yourself

[Verse 1]
I wake up to the sounds of the silence that allows
For my mind to run around, with my ear up to the ground
I'm searching to behold the stories that are told
When my back is to the world that was smiling when I turned

[Pre-Chorus]
Tell you you're the greatest
But once you turn, they hate us

[Chorus]
Oh, the misery
Everybody wants to be my enemy
Spare the sympathy
Everybody wants to be my enemy-y-y-y-y
(Look out for yourself)
My enemy-y-y-y-y
(Look out for yourself)
But I'm ready

[Verse 2]
Your words up on thе wall as you're prayin' for my fall
And the laughter in thе halls and the names that I've been called
I stack it in my mind, and I'm waitin' for the time
When I show you what it's like to be words spit in a mic
[Pre-Chorus]
Tell you you're the greatest
But once you turn, they hate us (Ha)

[Chorus]
Oh, the misery
Everybody wants to be my enemy
Spare the sympathy
Everybody wants to be my enemy-y-y-y-y
(Look out for yourself)
My enemy-y-y-y-y (Yeah)
(Look out for yourself)

[Bridge]
They say pray it away
I swear, that I'll never be a saint, no way
A chair in the corner is my place I stay

I shake and I think about the powers at play, the powers at play
And the kids in the dark that were doomed from the start
The child in the basement, face to the pavement
Oh, what a statement, love is embracement
Love is a constant, love is a basis
He cannot be, she cannot be, they cannot be changed
But keep on praying
Goodbye

[Chorus]
Oh, the misery
Everybody wants to be my enemy
Spare the sympathy
Everybody wants to be my enemy
Oh, the misery
Everybody wants to be my enemy
Spare the sympathy
Everybody wants to be my enemy

[Outro]
Pray it away, I swear I'll never be a saint, no way
My enemy
Pray it away, I swear I'll never be a saint
(Look out for yourself)

Genius Annotation

This “solo” version of “Enemy” was released in conjunction with the standard version. In comparison to the original track, which includes a verse from the Atlanta-based rapper JID, it rather features a bridge written and performed entirely by lead singer Dan Reynolds.

Slipping away from the Arcane: League of Legends narrative the standard version is based around, Reynolds uses the bridge to share a part of his personal story, as he addresses his struggles with faith – as he grew up in a devout Mormon home – and his deep dissatisfaction with the way that church has treated LGBTQ+ members, particularly young children: a struggle that led him to enter conflict with family, especially his parents.

The group previously defended disadvantaged or bullied kids on songs like “Underdog” and “It’s Ok.”
