“It’s Okay” serves as the eighth track from Imagine Dragons' fifth studio album, Mercury – Act 1. Lyrically, the song reinforces the idea that it is perfectly normal to not be happy, content, or comfortable in your own skin all of the time. It also widely incorporates themes of LGBTQ acceptance, which the band has openly and loyally devoted to since 2017, especially in regard to LGBTQ youth.
The song is also the third of six songs that ex-band member Andrew Tolman had a hand in penning.

That was one of the first songs I wrote for the record, maybe three years ago, which is so strange because people are going to think I wrote it during COVID. But it was really about embracing your sexuality and loving yourself and accepting yourself and accepting those who you love. I think also it’s trying to acknowledge the harm of toxic masculinity that can come from religion and rejecting our LGBTQ youth. But the song is not just LGBTQ-focused – it’s more about acceptance itself and how life is hard and it’s OK to share our hardships with each other.”

Another song that really came to life at Rick’s studio. He pushed me to strip the song down and recreate it from scratch from the demo state we showed it to him in. I wanted to create an intimate song that also could gradually grow into a bit of a memorable chant of affirmation and empowerment. I sat in a little room at Rick’s studio with a pile of instruments he had and just started rebuilding with his direction in mind. After I got it to a place that felt right, we all built upon it."
