Genius Answer

On the Making of A Matter of Life and Death documentary:

Steve Harris:

It was Bruce’s lyric he wrote specifically to the melody line so, I kind of got me' own way a little bit more on this album I suppose than ever. It’s a strong lyric and the melodies are still in tact, so I’m pleased.

Bruce Dickinson:

“Brighter Than a Thousand Suns” is about the Manhattan Project which is one of the most benign? titles for one of the most terrifying projects ever undertaken in human history, which was building a destructive weapon that could encompass the destruction of all human life on earth. The incredible concept that you could play god; this is as close as we’ve ever gotten to breaking worlds, to destroying worlds and things like that, is the bomb.
