Intro Lyrics

[Spoken]
What Zeus had kept inside the box broke loose from their confinement
All that was foul was now unleashed upon the world
Pandora, unable to undo what she had done, fell into despair
As she grieved, she heard a feeble quiver from the box
She lifted the lid once more, and out fluttered a small, bright, most beautiful creature she had ever seen
It flapped its delicate wings as it danced around Pandora, lightly brushing against hеr shoulder
Pandora immediately fеlt her angst melt away and her heart glow with warmth
It was hope that was kept in the innermost nook of the box
It trailed behind the miasma of darkness
Assuaging their ill-effects on humankind
Hope gave people the will to carry on living amidst the pain and strife

About

Genius Annotation

The story of Pandora’s box is a very popular tale in Greek mythos. Pandora was created by the Gods with special gifts that made her a beautiful woman but curious to a fault. The Gods sent her down to Earth with a locked box and told her under no circumstances should it be opened, however her curiosity eventually got the better of her and she opened the box, unleashing a variety of hardships and illnesses. In some versions of the story, Pandora attempts to reseal the box but fails in recapturing anything, only locking Hope inside. In other versions, Hope was also released, but no matter which you’ve heard, the purpose of the tale is to explain why evil exists.

J-Hope uses this tale to introduce his new album Jack In the Box, making the connection between Hope in the story to his stage name. Hope has become part of J-Hope’s whole stage presence, as his catchphrase is as follows,

“Hello! I’m your hope, you’re my hope. I’m J-Hope!”

Throughout the rest of the album (the second track “Pandora’s Box” in particular), J-Hope personifies Hope from the story as himself and takes on that role in his lyrics.
