A Thousand Pages Lyrics

[Intro: Drake & J. Cole]
(I'm working on dying)
Said you belong to the streets but the streets belong to me
It's like home to me (She belongs to the streets)

It's like home to me, I tatted your passport up
Now it's lookin' like a arm sleeve

Just know that was all me
Yeah (Know what I mean?)
Yeah -

[Verse 1: J. Cole]
With every record I be asking the masses to tune your hearts to me
I represent intelligent niggas that grew up harshly
But lately I've been questioning, second guessing
Whethеr or not I've got something to offer sincе I done eluded poverty

Or has the money watered me down? That truth is hard for me
Like the second time I got cut from the junior varsity
Fightin' back tears, I promised to switch gears
And said to myself "Whatever you do, you won't do it partially"
From this day forward, I move with a new ferocity
Ferrari coupe velocity, a fail proof philosophy
Success is in the effort, so if a nigga tried his hardest
I'm at peace knowing God ain't deal it in this group of cards for me
Some people say that I'm running third, they threw the bronze at me
Behind Drake and Dot, yeah, them niggas is superstars to me

Maybe deep down, I'm afraid of my luminosity
So when you see me on red carpets, I'm movin' awkwardly
Posin' all nervous, afraid of the judgement
And the thought of showin' too much of my day is repugnant
I be keepin' my kids away from the gaze of the public
Cause these days, it feel like hate is they favorite subject
Fuck it, attitude like a young O'Shea with a AK
Aimed at your brain, violate, and I bust it
I don't play when it come to family, that's one thing I refuse
Pimpin' they kids out for views to just to be in the news
Could never be me, I piss in the celebrity tea
God with me on this record, this is Heaven's EP
The tales official, the best nigga breathing, it just failed to hit you
You couldn't tell 'cause you fell for the bells and whistles
And that's an area I don't excel
I'm from the 'Ville where young girls talk grown as hell
That's raw, never saw one person go to Yale
But every nigga that I know done gone to jail
At least once, provin' we the ones police hunt
For the pains, we smoke three blunts the size of tree trunks
Too much hunger, it's no wonder these niggas can't keep up
So saying "Yes" to a feature just means I'm 'bout to eat lunch, bitch

I'm goin' for it, no never shall he punt
I'm the one and you can be sure, speaking of beachfront
I'm kickin' my feet up while I write this in somewhere tropical
Supposed to be relaxin', this passion makes that impossible, mm
[Chorus: Drake]
How much I gotta spend for you to pipe down? (Pipe down)
How deep I gotta dig for you to pipe down? (Pipe down)
All the things I've done up until right now (Right now)
I need a thousand pages just to write it down (Write it down)
Writing down these feelings, it's been overdue (Overdue)
Don't know how many pens it's gonna take to get over you
How much I gotta pen for you to pipe down? (Pipe down)
How deep I gotta dig for you to pipe down?

[Break: Jari$]
How much I gotta pen for this shit?
Y'know I been writin' everyday, and there’s no tellin’ when I’ll stop
Could fill a stack of books with these verses, you feel me?
A Thousand Pages type shit, yeah I wrote it
Just so much to say, you know?
Anyway, ayo -

[Verse 2: Jari$]
Man down, told you I can’t drown
I done walked a thousand miles to get to this damn crown
Remember I told you that I would always be so around
Working through all of that bullshit, been making myself proud
Yeah they said that they would ride, but where the fuck are they now?
Had to clear the smoky mirrors to see who was still around
Ain’t no one else's reflection, cold soul, relentless

Just a - real artist who moves and speaks so intrinsic
Not some corny wannabe who be spittin’ shit that be worthless
Rapping about that pain but never known what that "hurt" is
“You earned this” is just another phrase I’m never hearin’
But the hate that I receive is secretly just endearment
I’m takin’ the game over, I’m closer, homie I’ll show ya
Keep it real at all times, I’m even the same sober
Certified Lieutenant y’all just be the same soldiers
And I’m only twenty-two, but my mind is way older
Not too easily fooled, we givin’ out jewels and gems
Keep it cool with this shit you know the rules with them
Flawless is, just my standard, got the juice with pens
I proved it then, that I could keep up with all of these paces
I'm gon' write all my emotions, I'm gon' need a thousand pages
Time be wasted, if you don’t love what you doin’ for real
Finally stopped fucking with the music for real
And I used to lip sync “Billionare”, now I’ma do it for real
Feel me?

About

Genius Annotation

Jari$‘ unofficial remix of Drake’s “Pipe Down” off of his September 2021 album Certified Lover Boy.

This version combines J. Cole’s verse from his own remix titled “Heaven’s EP”. The instrumental used in both this version and Cole’s was constructed by the same producer, Rezcaze.

In Cole’s verse, he talks about his contemporaries and his mindset at the moment, relating his upbringing to his mindset to tackle each of his goals head-on. Cole reflects on his hesitation of the public and how he prefers to keep his children away from the mess of publicity, refusing to cash in his children for news coverage. Finally, he reconnects upon his driven mindset by mentioning his ability to stay focused when others tell him to relax.

In Drake’s chorus, he outlines the edges of a relationship that did not work out the way he wanted it to. Drake feels like no matter how much he loves her, no matter what he buys her, she’s never gonna be the woman that he needs her to be for him. But, after the breakup, he still cannot get her off of his mind and therefore he writes incessantly trying to quiet the memories of her. To tell someone to “pipe down” is to tell someone to relax. In this song, it refers to trying to quiet the memories of another person.

In Jari$‘ verse, he addresses accusations of being a “plant” and that everything he does is authentic. Stating that if he could translate every single emotion, he would need at least A Thousand Pages, but not a lot of people know that. What goes on behind the scenes is something critics never seem to be aware of.

This version contains a 40-bar verse from J. Cole, a 24-bar verse from Jari$, and an 8-bar chorus from Drake.
