Thursday Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I won't wear makeup on Thursday
I'm sick of covering up
I'm tired of feeling so broken
I'm tired of falling in love

Sometimes I'm shy and I'm anxious
Sometimes I'm down on my knees
Sometimes I try to embrace all my insecurities
So I won't wear makeup on Thursday
'Cause who I am is enough

[Pre-Chorus]
And there are many things that I could change so slightly
But why would I succumb to something so unlike me?
I was always taught to just be myself
Don't change for anyone

[Chorus]
I wanna laugh, I wanna cry
Don't want these tears inside my eyes, yeah
Don't wanna wake up and feel insecure
I wanna sing, I wanna dance
I wanna feel love inside my hands again
I just wanna feel beautiful

[Post-Chorus]
Oh-oh-oh, oh I-
Oh-oh-oh, oh I-
Oh-oh-oh, I just wanna feel beautiful
[Verse 2]
I'll wear my sweatpants on Thursday
And I'll drink sloe gin from a can
I'll build my own independence
I don't always need a man
You know sometimes I feel lonely
Could do with the company
Oh, I get high when I'm down
But you know that's alright with me
So I will do nothing on Thursday
Sit alone and be

[Pre-Chorus]
And there are many things that I could change so slightly
But why would I succumb to something so unlike me?
I was always taught to just be myself
Don't change for anyone

[Chorus]
I wanna laugh, I wanna cry
Don't want these tears inside my eyes, yeah
Don't wanna wake up and feel insecure
I wanna sing, I wanna dance
I wanna feel love inside my hands again
I just wanna feel beautiful
[Post-Chorus]
Oh-oh-oh, oh I-
Oh-oh-oh, oh I-
Oh-oh-oh, I just wanna feel beautiful
Oh-oh-oh, oh I-
Oh-oh-oh, oh I-
Oh-oh-oh, I just wanna feel beautiful

[Bridge]
I won't wear makeup on Thursday
'Cause who I am is enough

[Chorus]
I wanna laugh, I wanna cry
Don't want these tears inside my eyes, yeah
Don't wanna wake up and feel insecure
I wanna sing, I wanna dance
I wanna feel love inside my hands again
I just wanna feel beautiful

[Post-Chorus]
Oh-oh-oh, oh I-
Oh-oh-oh, oh I-
Oh-oh-oh, I just wanna feel beautiful
Oh-oh-oh, oh I-
Oh-oh-oh, oh I-
Oh-oh-oh, I just wanna feel beautiful

What did Jess Glynne say about "Thursday"?
Genius Answer

Glynne opened up about the song during an interview with Billboard, saying:

If you’re not smiling and in the best mood or looking amazing, someone’s gonna make a comment. Social media can be the devil sometimes and can make you judge yourself, and not for the right reasons.

She also commented on the reassurance that she felt while writing the track with fellow English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. The two bonded over shared insecurities and how being in the spotlight had affected them. She added:

[Ed Sheeran and I] spoke about the highs and lows of being famous and doing the job that we do. It was really cool because for me as an artist, I don’t really work with that many artists, and obviously you never know how it is for someone else and you feel like you don’t know whether that’s just you.

Why is the song named after the lyric "Thursday"?
Genius Answer

During an interview with Billboard in February 2019, Glynne revealed how “Thursday” came about during a writing session with Steve Mac and Ed Sheeran.

When asked about the origin of the song’s title, the article quotes Glynne commenting:

The “Thursday” part is irrelevant, and that not wearing makeup on a Thursday was just an example of [Glynne] wanting to do all of things to make herself feel good. But that particular example resonated with Ed and Steve, so they suggested she call the song “Thursday.”
