Fortunate Son Lyrics

[Chorus: Jessy Carolina]
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no senator's son, son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one, no

[Verse 1: Jessy Carolina]
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
Lord, don't they help themselves, no
But when the taxman comes to the door
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yeah

[Chorus: Jessy Carolina]
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no millionaire's son, no no
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one, no

[Verse 3: Jessy Carolina]
Some folks inherit star spangled eyes
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer More, more, more!

[Chorus/Outro: Jessy Carolina]
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no military son, son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one, one
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one, no no no
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate son, no no no

About

Genius Annotation

Fortunate Son” was an anti-war song written at the height of the Vietnam War. So it’s adequate that BioShock Infinite features it being sung by a bystander as the floating city of Columbia erupts in a civil war – even if the game’s events happen over 50 years before John Fogerty wrote it…

Writer-director Ken Levine and musical director Jim Bonney noted that it was a song that lent itself for a “period makeover” given rock music’s roots in blues, and for the cover they hired the frontwoman of a jazz project, Jessy Carolina & The Hot Mess.

What did Jessy Carolina say about "Fortunate Son"?
Genius Answer

I didn’t receive any instruction on how to sing the song. When I went into the session they asked if I could belt it, in other words, sing it loud. I did a few takes like that in a style similar to the CCR version. Then I tried a few different styles on my own to see if that was something they might like just so they had some different options to choose from. They told me there was going to be fighting all around and that the character would be leading a revolt of some kind in a factory setting, and then the character would probably be shot. I think they might have tweaked that idea a little bit after choosing the gospel version of the song. I was really surprised to see that they chose that version and was really flattered that they picked something weird that I tried out.
