Party in the U.S.A. (Demo) Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I hopped off the plane at LAX
With my tea and my cardigan
Welcome to the fame and sex (Whoa)

Am I gonna fit in?
I jumped in the cab and the driver's on the left side
Look to my right and I see the Hollywood sign
Oh my days, there's Macy's
Everybody seems so crazy

[Pre-Chorus]
My tummy's turnin' and I'm feelin' kinda homesick
Too much pressure and I'm nervous
That's when the taxi man turned on the radio
And the Jay-Z song was on
And the Jay-Z song was on
And the Jay-Z song was on

[Chorus]
So I put my hands up
They're playin' my song, the butterflies fly away
Noddin' my head like, yeah
Movin' my hips like, yeah
I got my hands up, they're playin' my song
I know I'm gonna be okay
Yeah, I think I'm gonna like the U.S.A
Yeah, I think I'm gonna like the U.S.A
[Verse 2]
Get to the club in my taxi cab
Everybody's lookin' at me now
Like, "Who's that chick that's rockin' kicks?
She gotta be from out of town"
So hard with my girls not around me
It's definitely not a Essex party
'Cause all I see are stilettos
I guess I never got the memo

[Chorus]
So I put my hands up
They're playin' my song, the butterflies fly away
Noddin' my head like, yeah
Movin' my hips like, yeah
I got my hands up, they're playin' my song
I know I'm gonna be okay
Yeah, I think I'm gonna like the U.S.A
Yeah, I think I'm gonna like the U.S.A

[Bridge]
Feel like hopping on a flight (On a flight)
Back to my hometown tonight (Town tonight)
Something stops me every time (Every time)
The DJ plays my song and I feel alright
[Chorus]
So I put my hands up
They're playin' my song, the butterflies fly away
Noddin' my head like, yeah
Movin' my hips like, yeah
I got my hands up, they're playin' my song
I know I'm gonna be okay
Yeah, I think I'm gonna like the U.S.A
Yeah, I think I'm gonna like the U.S.A
So I put my hands up
They're playin' my song, the butterflies fly away
Noddin' my head like, yeah
Movin' my hips like, yeah
I got my hands up, they're playin' my song
I know I'm gonna be okay
Yeah, I think I'm gonna like the U.S.A
Yeah, I think I'm gonna like the U.S.A

Genius Annotation

Before becoming one of American singer-songwriter Miley Cyrus‘ most recognizable hits, “Party in the U.S.A.” was originally intended to appear on English singer-songwriter Jessie J’s debut album. The song recounts Jessie’s initial reactions and feelings after moving to the United States in order to pursue her music career.

Although Jessie wrote and recorded the song, her label came to the consensus that the song wasn’t fitting for Jessie’s sound and persona, with which Jessie admits she agreed.

Jessie J commented more on the decision to give up the song on The Meredith Vieira Show in 2014, saying:

Honestly, at the time — it’s just a matter of, kind of, feel, you know? It could’ve been right at some point, but it just didn’t feel cool enough and I think, in hindsight, thinking back, I never would have been able to take it where Miley did. And she put my name on the map as a songwriter, which is so, really, very important to me.

Jessie’s full demo was posted online by co-writer Claude Kelly in 2013 before later being taken down.
