orchid Lyrics

[Intro]
I can't do this anymore

[Verse 1]
I hope you make it past New Year's
With a smile on your face
Countin' the days since I've known you
When your life rearranged

[Pre-Chorus]
And I still just don't know
Where the fuck else I'd go
'Cause it's not cancer
We just wish it was

[Chorus]
You're beautiful (Beautiful)
That's what you are
And I still don't know
How we fell in love
You're beautiful (Beautiful)
I swear it's true
And I just don't know
What else to do

[Verse 2]
You'll fly alone at Thanksgiving
To get out of New York
I'm just so happy you're living
Wouldn't ask you for more
[Pre-Chorus]
But you still just don't know
How to make some place home

'Cause we could've had it
Don't you wish we did?

[Chorus]
You're beautiful (Beautiful)
That's what you are
And I still don't know
How we fell in love
You're beautiful (Beautiful)
I swear it's true
And I just don't know
What else to do
(Two, three, four)

[Instrumental Break]

[Chorus]
You're beautiful (Beautiful)
I swear it's true
And I just don't know
What else to do

[Outro]
Tell me, are we
Still the only to fall?
You're beautiful

Genius Annotation

“Orchid,” is the fourth song on the album and reveals a state of helplessness. The singer’s relationship seems to be drifting apart, and he doesn’t know what to do except continue to love her. The title refers to the flower, orchids, which are associated with fertility and sexuality. According to teleflora.com, in ancient Greece if parents ate large or small orchid tubers they could ensure the birth and sex of their child. In actuality, orchids have no such power; the title of the song may refer to the singer’s love in that it looks pretty and seems like it means something, but in actuality it does nothing to save the relationship. The pure helplessness of such a fact leaves the singer to simply repeat how beautiful he finds her and how he doesn’t know what to do.

Genius Answer

I got an upright piano for my studio, and this was the first song that I recorded on it. I put a damper on my piano, which is this felt sheet that goes between the hammers and the strings, and it makes the piano sound so soft and gentle. At the end of the song, you’ll hear these crows come in, which is a sample that I recorded in Iowa when I was visiting my brother for his engagement party.
