We Both Know Lyrics

[Verse 1: Joshua Bassett & Sabrina Carpenter]
You came to tell me it's over
So how'd we end up in my bed?
You said we can't keep on seeing each other
So how come you haven't left?
And now we're both doing better
We went our separate ways
But every time we run into each other
There's so much that we don’t say

[Chorus: Joshua Bassett & Sabrina Carpenter]
I can't keep lying, baby (Baby)
I don't know if I can hide anymore
I can't pretend we're just friends
We both know where this is going
I can't pretend wе're just friends
We both know whеre this is going
We both know where this is going
We both know where this is going
Hey

[Verse 2: Sabrina Carpenter, Joshua Bassett & Both]
I hit you up after midnight
You're lucky I'm still awake
Me and my new man got into another fight
Well, darling, I'm on my way
[Chorus: Joshua Bassett & Sabrina Carpenter]
I can't keep lying, baby (Baby)
I don't know if I can hide anymore
I can't pretend we're just friends
We both know where this is going
We both know where this is going
We both know where this is going
Hey

[Bridge: Joshua Bassett & Sabrina Carpenter]
Say you want me, I, I, I know you want me
Say you want me, I, I, I know you want me
Say you want me, I, I, I know you want me
We both know where this is going (Hey)

[Chorus: Joshua Bassett & Sabrina Carpenter, Both]
I can't keep lying, baby
I don't know if I can hide anymore
I can't pretend that we're just friends
We both know where this is going
(We both know)
I can't keep lying, baby
I don't know if I can hide anymore
I can't pretend we're just friends
We both know where this is going
We both know where this is going
We both know where this is going
We both know where this is going
We both know where this is going
We both know where this is going

About

Genius Annotation

“We Both Know” is an unreleased collaboration between Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter, which was intended to appear on Bassett’s eponymous debut EP.

The song initially registered on both artists' BMI repertoires in November 2020, and was officially unveiled on the EP’s tracklist two months later. However, on February 18, 2021, the track was removed from the EP and was replaced with the solo track, “Telling Myself.” Though, on March 12, 2021, the song appeared on the streaming website Pandora, being taken down soon after.

In an interview with Billboard, Bassett explained that it was a mutual decision not to release the track in light of the drama surrounding Olivia Rodrigo’s hit song “drivers license,” which allegedly references Bassett and Carpenter:

I didn’t want my EP to be overshadowed by some other narrative that people were trying to make. I really want the focus to be on the art instead of some of the talk and the chatter. You shouldn’t live to please everybody, but at the same time, there are ways to be sensitive to situations where maybe [“We Both Know”] has a better chance at a different time.

What did Joshua Bassett say about "We Both Know"?
Genius Answer

In an interview with Brazilian site Febreteen, Joshua said

I was messing around with the idea and I sort of wrote most of the song, and I was thinking “you know who would sound great on this? Sabrina Carpenter.” And we had followed each other on Instagram… So my label, Warner [Records], was like “just message her and see what she thinks.” So I sent her a quick message and was like “Hey I think you’re really awesome, and I have this song I think you would sound great on, let me know what you think” and she responded like ten minutes later, gave me her number, and I sent her the song. Fortunately she liked it and we got together in the studio. It was just a blast to make and I’m really happy with how it all turned out.

What has Sabrina said about the song?

In an interview with Radio.com, Sabrina said

I can’t say too much… but it’s a collaboration very dear to my heart that I’m excited about.
